Departament of Numerical Mathematics

The chair was founded in 1960 within the system of mechanic-mathematical faculty. The basic reason of the creation of the faculty was sharp necessity in economic complex for the experts capable to carry out appropriate functioning of the first computers (the system programmers) and to create software for them. The conclusive fact was that the faculty was one of first in USSR and first on the territory of Western Ukraine in that field. The founder (by the initiative of professor Maksymovych, the rector of Lviv university) and long-term manager of the faculty was professor Kostovskyj. Up to middle 70-s the faculty released the experts-"calculators", specialized in system service of the computers such as BESM, EC and others; development and support of manufacture ASUT and so on.

Since the foundation the chair has been a constant supplier of the scientific and teaching staff during the creation of new faculties both at university, and other institutions. It was one of base chairs at the creation of the faculty of applied mathematics and mechanics at Lviv University in 1975. During the time of its functioning the chair was headed by proffessor Оlexander Kostovskyj (1960-1978), assistant professor Andrij Kardash (1978-1983), assistant professor Iosyp Liudkevych (1983-1991), assistant professor Illia Chulyk (1991-1993), proffessor Grygorij Tsegelyk (1993-2000). For this time some scientific directions has been formed within the chair. Today they are successfully developing both on the chair of computational mathematics and on the other university faculties. The main of them are the following

Newtonian majorants and diagrams for multy variables (scientific supervisor – proffessor Оlexander Kostovskyj; 4 PhD researches have been completed succesfully);
Numerical solution of the boundary value problems of mathematical physics (scientific supervisor – assistant proffessor Iosyp Liudkevych; 18 PhD researches completed).

Taking into account today circumstances, Department of Numerical Mathematics aspires in its scientific – pedagogical activity to adhere to the reasonable compromise between the courses on classical numerical methods and their applicationson the one hand and the of modern information technologies disciplines – on another. Novadays teaching staff of the chair works in the following directions:

Numerical solution of direct and inverse initial boundary value problems (assistant proffessor Roman Chapko);
Numerical solution of self-consistent problems of electronic optics and two-dimensional integral equations with week singularity in the kernel (assistant proffessor Borys Ostudin);
Numerical solution of boundary value problems for Poissone equation by finite difference method (assistant proffessor Anna Dudykevych);
The investigation of Iterative Methods for Solving Nonlinear Equations and Nonlinear Squares Problems (assistant professor Stepan Shakhno);
The functioning foundations development and the protection system creation of bank letters (assistant professor Yaroslav Garasym).
Numerical solution of matrix equation (assistant professor Anastasija Nedashkovska).

By the results of our researches a great amount of scientific issues has been published, including advanced foreign journals. Our lectures support scientific contacts with the faculties and institutes of the appropriate structure at the Warsaw university (Poland), Wroclaw university (Poland), university of Goettingen (Germany), university of Karlsrue (Germany), university of Linz (Austria) and others.
